Osteopathic Manual Care
The goal of treatment is to help people who may not have found relief elsewhere. The practice is not looking to sign people up for a life-time of care, but to obtain results so that you can return to your normal activities or specific sporting activity without pain or discomfort. As with any health-care practitioner, one should see some kind of tangible result in two or three visits. As an osteopathic manual practitioner, Miriam utilizes her extensive knowledge of anatomy combined with very precise palpation to assess motion. Each tissue of the body moves in a very specific way and if any part of the body becomes altered by surgery, birth, infection, physical or emotional trauma it will compensate by changing its motion. These new motions then may then become dysfunctional patterns that may cause pain.
The practice of osteopathy often involves "thinking outside the box"- looking for the cause of discomfort and pain rather than the symptoms. The practitioner may use many techniques to treat a particular problem, which may include myofascial, cranial, osteoarticular(joint), visceral or biodynamic approaches. This depends upon the evaluation of the individual. Specific stretching and strengthening exercises are also used to both integrate treatment and allow the individual to assist in self-management of their condition.
Miriam is a member of the Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners. Most extended health care plans cover all or part of the cost of osteopathic treatment such as Great West Life (including Queen's University), Sunlife, Empire Life, Blue Cross, Veterans Affairs and many others. Plans may vary between employers so please check your individual policy.
Currently, Osteopathic Manual Practitioners remain unregulated by the province of Ontario. Osteopathic Physicians (also known as Osteopaths in Ontario) who are educated and trained in osteopathic medical schools in the United States are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Please note that Miriam is neither an Osteopath nor a Physician.
